o   What questions need to be asked? (in order to make a vision/ strategize)

o   Lets us see immediate actions in terms of our long term goals

o   Gives us a world view; framework

o   Help us see patterns that we like or that we wish to change

Bunch's model for theorizing:

Description: 

·      Ex: Sexual Assault on Emory’s Campus (label your problem first) (framing something as a problem to be changed); the term sexual assault carries a lot of weight, has changed over time due to feminist work, give evidence and examples (ex: occurrence of assault is 1 in 3, reported rate is 3%; discrepancy can be constituted as a problem)

Analysis:

·      Different accounts of why that problem persists, what aspects you choose to focus on, what does your choice of vocabulary invoke/ “push under the rug”

·      Ex: fear of not being believed, past administrative responses, support within social group, self doubt, self blame, legal confusion, fear of future interaction with the perpetrator

Vision:

·      Long term goals- No Sexual Assault, what value changes do you wish to come about in the long run; must be careful with “all encompassing” final goals

·      Short term goals- ex: definition of consent; a concise, transparent legal process; “out of house” process

Strategy:

·      “who’s going to do what, when, where, and how?”

We are adding two more columns:

1) Context - what are the historical, economic, cultural, etc. etc.  currents, ideas, practices and so on that shaped this theory.

2) Critique: What does this do well? Not so well? Can we take this theory, change the problem and have it still work?
